KANSAS CITY, KAN. – Ahead of the November general election in Wyandotte County and before the election office begins to disseminate mail ballots in October, voters can be confident that both mayoral candidates answered positively on matters of civil rights and civil liberties.

A candidate questionnaire circulated by Kansans United for Civil Liberties, a voter education committee formed by the ACLU of Kansas, posed questions to the two candidates about advocating for expanded language access for voters, opposing 287g agreements with ICE, supporting an independent investigation into the Kansas City Kansas Police Department, and protecting residents’ protest rights and housing access.  On each of these issues, both mayoral candidates declared their support for civil liberties.

Micah Kubic, ACLU of Kansas Executive Director, shared the following:

“Wyandotte voters can feel confident that both candidates have made strong commitments to defend and expand civil liberties and civil rights in Wyandotte County. We are proud to provide this resource during such a crucial election season, and prouder still that Wyandotte County’s candidates have made these important commitments to justice.”

While KUCL does not endorse or oppose candidates, it has in previous elections sent out voter education materials to demonstrate the voting records or stated positions of candidates on key civil liberties issues, including voting rights, medical privacy and healthcare freedom, medical marijuana, and diversity and equity. In the 2024 Kansas general election, KUCL educated voters in state house and countywide races.
