KANSAS CITY AND EMPORIA, KAN. – Kansans United for Civil Liberties, a voter education committee affiliated with the ACLU of Kansas, is declaring two major victories for civil liberties in the 2024 Kansas primary races. In the Democratic primary for House District 35, Representative Marvin Robinson in Wyandotte County was defeated by challenger Wanda Brownlee Paige, and in the Republican primary for House District 60, Representative Mark Schreiber of Lyon County prevailed against his challenger.

“Kansans have had enough of politicians’ misinformation or misrepresentation of their positions,” said Micah Kubic, Executive Director of the ACLU of Kansas. “When given truthful, reliable, and accurate sources focused on issues of civil liberties and civil rights, voters prioritize those issues even amidst the noise of the campaign season. We’re honored that Kansans United for Civil Liberties was able meet this need to ensure voters had the information they needed to vote according to their values.”

While KUCL does not endorse or oppose candidates, it did send out voter education materials ahead of the primary election, demonstrating the voting records of Representative Robinson and Representative Schreiber on key civil liberties issues, including voting rights, medical privacy and healthcare freedom, medical marijuana, and diversity and equity.  KUCL spent nearly $50,000 across the two districts to ensure voters had the information they needed about the candidates in these races.

The voter education materials also directed recipients to find out how the incumbents and their challengers committed to these civil liberties issues, if they responded at all.

In the last week preceding Election Day, House District 35 notably saw a frenzy of mailed assets sent to voters supportive of Rep. Robinson, some funded by groups such as Americans for Prosperity, Term Limits, and Kansas Family Voice.
